Hi everyone,
It was nice meeting you yesterday!
1. Please purchase The Oxford Book of Japanese Short Stories as soon as possible, either at Shakespeare Bookstore (the books should arrive on Monday), online, or wherever available.
2. Read two stories (Sansho the Steward and The Third Night) and post one comment on jpn20n01fall2015.freeforums.net, under “Week 2” by Wednesday, September 2nd (Don’t worry if you miss the date this week). You don’t have to write about both stories, just pick one. Feel free to post your comment but you could choose to answer the questions that I posted in the forum (not obligatory).
3. Respond to your classmate’s discussion questions by Thursday, September 3rd.
How to post your comments in the forum:
- Click “Week 2”, then “Create Thread” on upper right corner. Don’t forget to type your name!
- You can click “Quick Reply” when responding your peer’s posts.
4. Start reading stories in the book for your final project. Here is the list of the stories from which you can select:
Separate Ways by Higuchi Ichiyo
The Peony Garden by Nagai Kafu
Blowfish by Satomi Ton
Carp by Ibuse Masuji
The Accordion and the Fish Town by Hayashi Fumiko
The Flower-Eating Crone by Enchi Fumiko
Blind Chinese Soldiers by Hirabayashi Taiko
The Rifle by Kojima Nobuo
Unzen by Endo Shusaku
The Bet by Abe Kobo
Three Policemen by Yoshuyuki Junnosuke
Toddler-hunting by Kono Taeko
The Duel by Kaiko Takeshi
A Very Strange, Enchanted Boy by Tsushima Yuko
Desert Dolphin by Shimada Masahiko
Some stories are very short, but please pick one carefully. You will choose one of these for your project in Week 4.
Please start looking for inexpensive copies of other books as well. It might take time for delivery.
Have a nice weekend. See you next Friday!
