I think the relationship between the bears and Kojuro is sincere. In the book, it says that the bears like the hunter. Also, the hunter likes the bears. One scenario in the article shows that the mother bear and the cub stay together having a talk about the further view.Kojuro is attracted by this scenario and he does not want the wind to destroy the view which the mother bear and the cub gaze at. He really cares about them and like them. However, as a hunter, it is his job to kill bears for living. He feels really conflicted for it. In his mind, he still feels so sorry for what he does for the bears. In page 111, he says " forgive me bears". It shows that he really feels sorry for killing the bears.t
I think Kojuro is really humble to the shopkeeper. In the book, Kojuro bows low to the shopkeeper and does polite greetings. When he eats in the shop, he eats very carefully. He is really humble to the shopkeeper but the shop keeper is very cunning. The shopkeeper pretends that he doe not need the bear. Once the price of the bears is low, he just gets the bear by "suppressing a slight of grin of satisfaction". The shopkeeper is very happy to get the bear with low price but he suppresses this feelings.
I think the ceremony is the bears memorizes Kojuro. Even Kojuro dies, the bears remember the kindness and understanding from Kojuro. In the book, it mentions that he can understand bears' language. Also, he did not kill the mother bear and the cub. Also, he did not kill the huge bear when it requests Kojuronot kill it until two years later the bears will die in front of the house. At this moment, Kojuro still does not kill the bear. Even he is the hunter, he respects the bears. The bears also show their respect to Kojuro.
The narrator might be a traveler who travels to this mountain and creates this story.
In the page 103, the narrators says that " I must confess that I have never actually seen either Mt Nametoko or the liver of a newly killed bear. All this is based on what I have heard from other people or worked out for myself. It shows that the narrator heard from the other people and the narrator creates the story.
Discussion question
Even Kojuro knows that the price is low, why he still sells the bears the shopkeeper? Kojuro is killed by the bear and why the bear says that " I did not mean to kill you?"
The large bear says that he has things to do. What kind of things he needs to do ?
