The old fireside makes the current fire continue to burn even though the old fire might disappear. The old fireside is joyful because it makes the fire keep burning. This fire is sorrow. Here, this fire is old fire because the old fire disappears and it makes the new fire burning. People might not remember the old fire and what they can only remember is the currently burning fire. The old fire is easily forgotten, so the wanderer thinksthis fire is kind of sorrow. After the man thinks about the sorrow of this fire. He becomes more positive. He thinks that past is past and now is now (P34). He might feel sorrowful for the sacrifice of the old fireside ,but he still appreciates the current fire which brings him so much warmness and comfort. He becomes thankful for the current life instead of feeling sorrowful for the past. In page 35, it says that the man forgot his sorrow of endless wandering and returned to the days when he was boy. At this moment, he enjoys the fire and nature which makes him forget the sorrow of the past. His heart becomes more lighted around the fire. He thinks the fire is pleasant because the fire still brings him a lot of comfort and easiness. Even though the old fire is kind of sorrow, but overall the fire brings him pleasure. I think in our life there is still sorrow in our past. We might feel unpleasant about it, but we need to appreciate the current life because it still might bring us happiness. We still need to see the positive sides of our lives.
The boys get really excited when they see the fire burning on the Izu hill (page 33). When their fire does not burn, they feel angry about it. The boys want to make fire to feel excited. Once they feel failure to burn the fire, they do not feel happy about it because they do not get what they want. They appreciate the appearance of fire. For the wanderer, he feels thankful for the fire because he gets warmness by heating his clothes. The fire makes him warm and comfortable physically and mentally. In page 35, it says that “he forgot the sorrow of his endless wandering and the old man’s heart returned once more to the days when he was a boy.” After he got warm, he feels hopeful and relaxed. He also feels thankful for people who make the fire. In page 34, “his heart filled with thanks and he felt the tears come.” He really feels thankful about the fire. In the end of the story, he puts more twigs into fire which might burn longer and the other people might need it. He appreciates the fire and wants fire to bring other people comfort. The wander also hesitates to leave the fire. In page 33, when the boys were going to leave the beach, they finally see fire caught. They feel happy about it but they soon go home.
The boys really hope and want the excitement which the appearance of fire will bring. They wait for the fire to bring them happiness and excitement. The wander thinks the appearance of fire is a gentle gift for him and he feels really thankful. Since the wander might have so much sorrow wandering. He might experience many difficulties and the appearance of fire makes him feel the fire is treasurable and valuable. The boys might not have the same experience as him, so they have different attitudes toward the fire.
My discuss question
In the end of page 34, how do you interpret “could it be that in this fire was the image of another as it burned long ago, and with it sons and grandsons long unseen?”
