I think the story shows how true it is that young kids take for granted the small things in life and how they think life is forever. They just made a fire and then left after it lit, almost as if they were unappreciative of the fire and what it can provide. They were entertained for a minute by it and then went home. They were even jealous of another fire that someone made somewhere else. They were jealous of what others had without even knowing if those people had homes to go to like these kids did or if that fire was all they had to keep them warm at night. The man being cold and old, appreciated this fire and seen it as a gift and almost a lifeline because he was so cold and had been traveling for a while, and could have been near death. He stays with the fire and warms every part of his frozen body until the fire is almost dead. Then, he replenishes it as if to say thank you to this gift for saving him and he moves on.
Discussion question: When the man finds the fire he talks about a fireside 10 years before and the possibility of seeing an image in the fire from long ago with sons and grandsons long unseen. What do you think is the significance of this information?

It also says later that the fire is "one of sorrow" and the "past is past" and "now is now". The old man clearly has a deeper and sadder backstory than the author goes into and while he's a wanderer now, he apparently had a family who he was really happy with before. I feel like something tragic happened to the man and he was forced to wander from the happy fire with his family.

I agree with Won Young Seo; I feel that there he has tragic story in connection to the fire when he was younger. Maybe he was reminiscing his younger days before he became a wanderer. We can see that because the old man's voice was trembling when he was saying how joyful and pleasant the fire is. In the next paragraph, he teared up while thanking the people who made the fire.
