Comparing Shukichi and Tomi's relationship to the couple from Spring Riding in a Carriage I think that of Tomi and Shukichi was a lot more natural and flowing. Just from being with each other for so many years they are at the point where it is needless to argue so much and they understand each other without barely speaking.
Tokyo Story also made me reevaluate the relationship that the couple in the novel had. Unlike Tomi and Shukichi, it seems like both of them had no family as they have all quarreled with each other. In such a though time in both of their lives they are left to depend only on each other, with nobody else to turn to or to release their anger and sorrows. They are both stuck in a circle of having only each other and also getting worse day by day. This interdependence only brings out grief and self pity in them.
In the case of Tokyo Story, although the couple's children may not be perfect at all times they still love and respect each other, and most of them show up when Tomi falls ill. This allows the family to lean on each other in such a though time.
Towards the end of the movie, it is said "She (Tomi) died peacefully. Without suffering and full of years". The family also reminisce on her coming to Tokyo and being cheerful and full of life. This is very different from the situation the wife in the novel was in, as she had to spend her youth in pain and suffering.
I think although the couple's from Spring Riding in a Carriage relationship was a lot more hectic, it is also understandable why it came to be that way and very sad.
