As I was reading both stores, what struck me were the supernatural elements of both stories that aren't really supernatural.
Pretty much everything about "The Third Night" is supernatural, with the strange child, the changing dreamscapes, and the overall strangeness of the entire story. The thing is, everything was apparently nothing but a dream, so is the ending supposed to be taken seriously? Is this a story about a man whose subconscious is reminding him of a horrible deed that he forgot about? But if the murder actually, does the "100 years ago" aspect imply that the man was reborn and he'd remembering a past life?
As for "Sansho the Steward", the branding dream seems to have been dismissed to be nothing but a dream to the children but the story states that the image of the god changed and had two crosses seemingly chiseled into it. Does this imply supernatural elements or the dream of the branding was their subconscious reminding the children that there is supposed to be a god watching over them? If it is real, then their masters probably would have mentioned something about it but nobody mentioned the branding afterwards so it might have all been a dream?
Are these dreams simply dreams or is there something supernatural happening?
