While reading, I get the feeling that the husband doesn’t love the wife and is only taking care of her because it is his duty as her husband. However, after I finished reading I felt that the husband does love his wife and is just exhausted from taking care of her. There are moments in the story where he gets fed up with her tantrums but he still complies to her demands. For example, at the part where she demanded him to read her the bible he didn’t voice any objections. He also doesn’t like the idea of her dying. This can be seen on page 122 when she asks where her bones would be laid and the husband just ignores her. By ignoring her, he doesn’t want to acknowledge the fact that she’s dying soon. On page 121, “If he never saw her again, it would be possible to think of her always as still being alive.” This shows that her dying will have a huge impact on his life. Based on this line, it seems that as long as he doesn’t see her, she will keep living in his mind and heart.
Question: What does Spring symbolize in this story?
