I think the relationship between the protagonist and the wife is deep and authentic. The protagonist cares for the sick wife and is a constant source of support during her most vulnerable time. I think he is devoted and patient with her as he nurses through all of her violent coughs and sputum, and he does this for hours on end. I know that it is not easy to nurse someone especially for long hours as he does. The wife is acutely ill and in the worst condition of her life. The wife's demands are most likely coming from her illness and pain of her sick body, not her original character. The husband seems to understand this and tries to stay positive by being "rational" as the wife calls it, which is hated by her because she is in an hypersensitive state. Despite all of the spiteful comments and demands, the husband nurses her and stays by her side until the end. Although their relationship may not seem all that great in the initial impression, I think they are going through a process of grievance in the wife's death. Furthermore, I think the husband experiences caregiver-strain and is somewhat burnt out from the constant nursing, which is almost inevitable seeing how he nurses her constantly. It is hard to say that their relationship is not going well when they are going through these situations. In fact, their relationship seems to outlive the suffering caused by the illness, and I think the wife receives the utmost love and devotion she could get from her husband. I think their relationship is authentic because they stay together through the most disgusting, vulnerable, and emotionally difficult time in their lives and stay affectionate in their own ways. In the end I think they both were able to accept death rather than loathe it and live peacefully as they transitioned from the hospital to their house. The ending of the story was sweet and refreshing after all of the bedside suffering. I think their grieving process is healthy and they deal with it together until the end when they accept death wholeheartedly. I think it was a sweet story.
