I feel the main character indulges in her own world. In the article, she mentions many times that she feels really comfortable when she sleeps in her cozy room. In her comfort zone, she can forget troubles in her life. I think sleeping seems that she tries to escape from the daily stress to isolate herself from the mundane world. Also, in page 437, she says that" I would sit there staring into space, under the influence of this imperative to wait that filled the apartment like a mysterious vapor." Then she feels that she can respond to everything around her and only her mind is active. She says that " I had been enveloped in an impenetrable membrane and only my mind was active, as all of the terrible possibilities visited me like evil spirits." I feels that she seems to be overwhelmed by her negative imagination. This negative imagination is like the envelop which covers her closely. I also the a feel that she is very unsecure of the uncertainty. She says that all of the terrible possibilities visited me like evil spirits. She regards the possibilities as the evil spirit, which tells that she seems to feel scared and week to face the possibilities. I think at this moment she looks at possibilities in a negative and fixed way. She regards the possibilities as evil instead of looking them in different ways.
Also, she is a sensitive person. She always examines her inner feelings and she is sensitive to things around her. In the article, she says many times that I feel something changes inside me. It makes me feel that she carefully examines her inner feelings and the changes are easily recognized.
Discuss question:
The main character says that she and her husband can smell the kimchee and dream of Kimchee. In page 442, she says that "we could share these aspects of daily life, and I knew that sharing this kind of connection, was what constituted our life together."
what does the kimchee represent here? what do you think sharing plays the role in the relationship?
