North No.2 of "Pluto," by Naoki Urasawa, Osamu Tezuka, and Takashi Nagasaki, talks about the genuine and sincere friendship between a robot and a human. I believe the difference between humans and North No.2 is that despite No.2 being a robot, he actually seems more "human" and "real" to me than any other human being. What I mean is that No.2 seems more understanding and sincere than any other human. No.2 doesn't see Paul Duncan (Paulo Holy) or his music as profit like the music and movie producers nor does he feel anger or hatred toward Duncan for berating him, but instead sees Duncan for who he is, a human who's misunderstood and just wants to be loved. I believe anyone would just quit after being called "bland," "boring," and "fake," but No.2 doesn't feel anger, and instead he understands Duncan by looking at his perspective, experiences, and past. He feels Duncan's pain and sadness through his music and that deep down in Duncan's unconscious, there's a fragment of his memory that's been repressed which needs to resurface for Duncan to believe in humanity and kindness again. And that memory is his love for his mother.
No.2 is tantamount to what humanists say that "human nature is good." Despite the destruction and bloodshed of war that many humans create because of greed or selfishness, No.2 makes us believe that there's kindness and sincerity in humans and peace is possible between humans and robots. Despite No.2 being created as a killing weapon/machine for war, he despises destruction and war like many humans do. He covers his body because he hates his body that was created for destruction. No.2 is human in that he experiences nightmares like humans do and feels pain like humans do. His experience in war is a memory that he wants to forget, but will never be erased. However, like Duncan said, No.2 doesn't belong on the battlefield, because he understands that war will only bring pain and suffering to humans and to everyone.
Discussion Question: What do you think happened at the end? Do you think North No.2 survived?
