I agree with Gen’s father when he said that war changes people. Most Japanese people are for the war because they believe that it is right and that it is their duty to protect the country for the Emperor. However, many do not understand why the war is happening and why Americans and British men are enemies. They just believed the words and rumors from the higher ups. The war also made people greedy when their lives were at stake. After the bombing of Hiroshima, Gen saved a father and son and they promised to help him when he’s in trouble. When Gen asked them to help carry his mother, they turned away. Mr. Pak who happens to be close by helped his mother and carried her to safety. Unlike the father and son who are Japanese, Mr. Pak who’s a Korean helped Gen’s family throughout the story. This shows that even a foreigner like Mr. Pak had the heart to help Japanese people while the Japanese wouldn’t even want to help other Japanese people.
Unlike the others, Gen’s family was mostly against the war even when they were branded as traitors. When people heard that the Nakaoka family were traitors, they turned away from them. Even close friends and teachers of the Nakaoka family started to despise and throw rocks at them. Gen’s family believed that the war was an excuse for the higher ups in order to gain resources from other countries. Gen’s father especially despised the war and the after effects. Another person that also mentioned the war was meaningless was the kamikaze pilot that Koji met. This shows that there were others out there similar to Gen’s father in thinking that the war is pointless and that it should be stopped.
Question: Would you be willing to help Gen carry his mother while the fire is spreading or would you run away like the father and son?
