It was a strangely bittersweet story about awkward teenage infatuation and affection, the dark confusion of growing up, and the inevitable parting of two people who weren't meant to be (at least at the time). I felt that it was like a story of a summer fling, except set in the mountains in the fall, with an age gap and no actual relationship. (...) Anyway, I thought the theme was somewhat like a commentary on social relations and the need for one another, since much of what stood out to me was how the dance troupe and the narrator mutually needed each other (in terms of business, companionship, even blossoming desire), and how a stranger "naturally" relied on him while he relied on yet another at the end of the story. He was drawn to the warmest performer in a family troupe, and seeking her out led to him being surrounded by the family as well, and he began to match his pace to the group he didn't want to leave. When Kaoru asked "Why do you walk so fast?" I thought of how socially awkward he is, and also the pace of New Yorkers. People who always walk fast are also alone most of the time, unless they have a companion with a matching pace; in this case, the narrator had Kaoru running after him, which I think was all the more a reason for his fondness and subsequently overwhelming sadness when in the end, they could hardly speak to one another, and he finally had to leave. When he loses that connection, he finds himself helpless and in need of another's kindness, just as the old lady who suddenly found herself alone with her grandchildren did. However, I think that rather than his beginning depression, being able to feel his loneliness and rely on others was still a big step forward.
Discussion Question: What do you think is the nature of the relationship that budded between the dancer and our traveler?

At first, I didn't really know how to describe their relationship but after reading your comment, I really do feel like it was a "summer fling". It was sort of a chance meeting during their journeys from home and though they seemed to flirt with each other and feel attracted to each other, I feel like they could never really have stayed together because they both had another place to go back to and lived different lives. I feel like he might feel nostalgic for her every once in a while but I doubt he'd actually go to seek her out.

I too agree that it gave off a summer fling kind of feeling. Throughout the story, we see that the narrator wants to get to know the group of dancers especially the young girl. In the end, he did try to ask her out to the movies with him but was shot down by the woman saying that the girl can't go alone with him. I also agree with I that this is a somewhat bittersweet story. To me, it seems as though the narrator and the girl are trying to show that they are maybe attracted to each other but was kind of hiding it because of their circumstances (each living in different worlds with the narrator being a student in Tokyo and the young girl a traveling performer).

It does have that summer fling in the fall/winter kind of feeling, but I'm not sure what the dancer's actual feelings are. Perhaps their feelings just couldn't be actualized but it still felt like it was one sided on the narrator's part. The dancer made up, looks older than she is and for the narrator who was depressed was an attraction because of her beauty and I guess exoticism as being a traveling performer of which there are stigmas. But getting to know them it turned into love, but the dancer, who is being adamantly protected by her family to remain untouched, if she even has feelings I'm not sure she knows what they are. For her it could be a really close friendship.
