while not necessarily a long story I think that Lemon cuts straight to the point of the story, The main character is a man who has progressed in his diagnosis of tuberculosis and seems like he doesn't have much time left in his life. Although it isn't explicitly stated I believe that this man has been going through a phase of depression because of his reclining health and isn't able to take part in the hobbies he once was able to enjoy himself in. Almost like a metaphor reflecting his own life I believe that the reason why he was so particular about dark and lifeless seeming places was because of what he was going through. Although the shop isn't particularly bright and perfect it was still enough to stand out in that particular environment, I believe the lemon was similar to that, almost like a rare diamond found in a pile of coal, it just stood out to him. Maybe the reason why he felt so happy about the bright yellow lemon was simply because it existed in one of the darker parts of his town, maybe even if hes going through dark times there may be something bright for him as well.
Discussion Question: Why leave the Lemon in the shop even though he really seemed to like it?

I think he left the lemon in the shop because he wanted the lemon to brighten the shop's atmosphere. As compared to the other colors, the color yellow is able to attract one's attention to it. And by leaving it on top of all the red and blue shows that yellow is superior to the rest.

I think the narrator already feels accomplished and happy absorbing all the lemon's vitality and is finally able to start his new life without needing the lemon beside him. In addition, leaving the lemon behind the shop purifies the Maruzen that is ominous and filled with dark ambience.
