I found this story to be very enjoyable. For one thing, we see how Anju changed after being sold into slavery. On page 2, "The girl suddenly looked at her brother. then said, 'If we could only hurry to where father is waiting for us...' The boy replied in the wise fashion that children adopt, ' We haven't gone very far yet.'" From this, we can see that Anju is the childish one of the two while Zushio is the mature one. This changes once they got branded by Saburo. Anju kept to herself unlike before where she confided everything to her brother. This may be to prevent anymore problems if they were overheard by Saburo again. She waited until both she and her brother were alone in the mountains before telling Zushio her plans for him to escape. Anju waited for the right moment and right place to share her plans to him to prevent them from being caught. It was like she had a whole plan planned out right after being branded. I admire her a lot for sacrificing her self for the sake of her brother.
Compared to Anju, I think that Ubatake changed to a more selfish person. In the beginning, she was the one who would ask other people for things and offer to help the mother. Like when she went off to ask for some straw and mats for lodging under the bridge. Then this changes once she boards the slave boat to Sado. She did try to stop the man but when she failed, she jumped off the boat. I thought she would have at least went to where the children is but she wasn't mentioned throughout the story. Maybe she did want to save the children after jumping off the boat but died instead but I still find her act kind of selfish. She should have stayed with the mother until the end like when she traveled with her and her kids but no, she literally gave up after being kicked by the man.
In conclusion, I think Anju was able to give up her life to save her brother but Ubatake gave up hers to save her own life of being a slave.
Now the question is, do you guys think Ubatake should have jumped off the boat or stayed with the mother on their journey to Sado?
