The narrator in this story tells of his enjoyment and attraction of things with a certain beauty to it. In this story,a particular yellow lemon fulfilled his craving allowing his day to be filled with excitement and happiness. The color yellow usually gives you a feeling of either love or hate depending on your mood, personality, cultural influence or psychological aspects. In other words, it can make you feel an extreme euphoric touch to your everyday lives creating a warm uplifting atmosphere around your existence. On page 151 he says, "I felt unusually happy, for it seemed as if the ominous mass that had been weighing upon me for so long had grown lighter the moment I had grasped my new possession. An incongruous paradox, perhaps, but true my stubborn melancholia had been diverted by a single piece of fruit. How strange the human spirit." The brightness of the color yellow as well as the shape and texture greatly influence his 'inner world' refreshing his mind and spirit similar to when your enduring the heat at the heart of the summer and you drink some ice cold lemon juice cooling your entire body. At the Maruzen department store he felt disappointingly depressed and fatigue while he stacked books onto a pile of colors. He excitingly decided to place the lemon at the top and left it there feeling just like a kid waiting for his prank to come into fruition. This story ends with him walking down the streets of Kyogoku taking in the colored motion picture posters it reminds me of a dream I once had during my childhood where the sky and buildings structure were neon colors changing spending on my emotional state. I also felt a strange happy feeling as if I could do anything my heart desire in a nonviolent innocent way.
