These two relationships seem to be a parallel of each other; on one hand with Okada and Aguri, the female is financially dependent on the male and the male is emotionally or psychologically dependent on the female. On the other hand with Kosono and Yuki, the male is financially dependent on the female while the female is emotionally dependent on the male. The age roles are opposing as well but in both cases the older one seems to need the younger one more. In both cases too I think it is the male who appears more vulnerable and is led by the female.
Okada was always healthy and confident in his looks until shortly after his starting his relationship with Aguri, anyone would be able to piece together that their relationship is the cause; she is almost like a succubus draining the life from him but he is so obsessed and needs her so much that he refuses to let go despite the mental and physical toll it is taking on him. He even knows that Aguri would be okay without him and simply move onto someone else but he doesn’t seem to care.
On the other side Kosono in her age is still well at least in appearance and mostly keeps her troubles under the surface not being open about her thoughts and desires but more so taking the roundabout way to get what she wants. If we believe Yuki, she is projecting herself onto him, refusing to let him go despite his straying and the stress he causes her because she needs him to do what she couldn’t. Yuki is a bit lost on the path of life and lets himself be taken in by Kosono; even when he ran away he kept coming back because he’s not sure what else to do with himself.
Question: Both stories seem to have a theme of modernity, but should everything old be abandoned and the new blindly trusted in?
