To me, I feel that the relationship between Kosono and Yuki was very obvious and easy to understand. At first it seems as if Yuki is just another plaything for the Kosono with her paying for his living expenses and giving him room and board for free. But then you get to see that she cares for him in a motherly way. And Yuki cares for her as a son would care for a mother. Kosono already has a child, but I feel as if she sees Yuki as a child she never had to opportunity to raise herself. Michiko has grown and fallen into the same ways Kosono did, but Yuki was different, and not at all amused by the geisha ways. I feel as if she was trying to let him achieve true love and happiness in whatever way he may have saw fit, unlike she was able to. She was like a mom telling her child to be happy in whatever it is that they do, and trying to give them a better life than what she had. I feel as if she sort of regretted the fleeting lifestyle she lived and wanted to give Yuki a better chance. And Yuki acted as a child would by quickly becoming bored of his chosen lifestyle, not wanting to commit, and then running away from his problems repeatedly.
Aguri and Okadas relationship was a bit harder for me as there's a lot of imagining that goes on. At first glance this is easily a sugar adds relationship where he buys Aguri nice things in exchange for her "company". There are times where it seems like Okada truly loves Aguri, but there also times where it seems like he's going crazy from this disease he is suffering from, and that its all in his head. It seems as if he mostly loves Aguri and that the times that he imagines other situations, are the times that his uncertainties come out. He often wonders how others would perceive the couple together, or how Aguri really sees him. Does she just like him for the nice things? Do people think they are creepy?
My questions:
In Aguri, Okadas mind is constantly racing, and very choppy. Do you think that what is happening is real? Or is it all in Okadas head?
And in portrait of an old geisha, why do you think kosono decided to take Yuki who is mostly a stranger to her, into her home and take care of him simply so he could live his dream. And why didn't she make him leave when he gave up?
