In my opinion, although the two stories Aguri and Portrait of an Old Geisha are extremely different, I cannot help but think of how similar the relationships are. In the case of Aguri and Okada, Aguri is a lot younger and being taken care of by Okada. He is so obsessed with her that he buys her everything she needs or wants just to please her and even more so himself. Whereas in the case of Yuki and Kosono, Yuki is being taken care of by Kosono. Kosovo gives him a place to live and create although she isn't extremely tied up in his business and only visits once in a while. The similarity in the two relationships (although of a different nature) is that both Yuki and Aguri are being taken care of to the point that they both lose a healthy passion towards life and survival. Although we do not know too much about Aguri's true feelings, we know that she is very obsessed with her image and it is her top priority - the clothes she wears, how she looks like on the street to other people etc. As far as we know she doesn't have any big passions in life other than looking good and pleasing to men. We also get the sense that she despises Okada and other than him giving her money to buy nice things he is a complete nuisance to her. Similarly with Yuki although originally grateful to Kosono for what she has done for him he has some despise towards her life. Being a handyman used to be his passion and his hobby, alongside something that lets him earn money to survive. After living in the comforts of Kosono's care he loses his passion as there is nothing driving him towards survival, he has all he needs. Both relationships seem very destructive towards the persons soul; they have almost come to lose their purpose in life, being confused about what is actually important.
Question: what do you think were Kosono's intentions towards taking care of Yuki? As she already had an adopted daughter is it really a desire to formulate a persons life or maybe she had some different motifs? Maybe just kindness?
