Kosono and Yuki's relationship was more of a mother and son than anything else. Kosono life as a Geisha was one of great prosperity because of her exquisite ways of provoking lively conversation. She had a certain special charm which delighted both older and younger Geisha around her using her strange yet humorous tales to attract the flock of captivated people until she had filled their stomach with burst of laughter. When she had saved a large fortune from her many years as a professional Geisha she settled into a private life of classical waka poetry and adopted a relative's daughter. Yuki, a handy repairman was taken in the care of Kosono because of how empty she felt her life has been after her countless failed engagements. She perhaps saw Yuki as a potential candidate for her adopted daughter Michiko or taking care of Yuki could had been a way of satisfying her unsuccessful past remorse regarding her inability to find a suitable husband to bear children.
In the relationship between Aguri and Okada, they were viewed as a rich man with his spoiled daughter. First of all there was a huge age gap of 17 years which made them seemed weirdly creepy. Okada loved Aguri as if she was a valuable gem of young purity, and he loved himself as well in terms of his slender girlish features. Personally it seemed to me that he probably had an unusual fetish for extremely young girls. Aguri was a gold digger who only cared for accessories and accommodations while using her young body to seduce Okada's craving for sexual needs and fetish attribute to her hands and white pale flesh. Okada was failing in health due to his diabetes's symptoms and his other inexplicable weight lost and fatigue. This relationship was taboo and the narrator may had depicted Okada's bizarre sickness as a representation of their unhealthy relationship.
Discussion questions: What are your thoughts on Kosono as a character? What do you think are Kosono's true intentions for keeping a perfectly young healthy man well taken care of?
