Kosono seems to always be changing after a life she's never had. She's hinted to have had an abusive childhood full of punishments and she's never had a peaceful family life. She's always worked hard as a geisha entertaining people and telling her life stories but she doesn't seem to have had time to calm down and have time to herself. I think that's why she's always striving to learn new things even in her old age but it doesn't fulfill her because she tells herself that she's learning it for her job as a geisha. I think that's why she also adopted Michiko and why she took in Yuki and almost treats him like her own child. She seems to want them to be free to reach their dreams and gives them the means to do so; this might be because she herself wasn't able to do what she dreamed of. We never find out how she became a geisha and whether that's truly what she wanted to do.
It's also interesting that the narrator is one of her many teachers. I'm guessing he learned everything through letters and neighborhood rumors, but that shouldn't be possible because a large part of the story is told in Yuki's perspective.
Question: Why do you think she's so lenient towards Yuki's inactivity towards his dreams?

I believe she wanted him to find a simple purpose in his life in order to find true happiness. If he kept agonizing himself by spending so much time trying to 'discover' an invention which wold be useful to mankind it would only keep him away from the important values that life brings us.

I believe Kosono is so lenient because she understands that some things can't be forced or pushed. She mentioned to Yuki to find what he wants to do when the time's right. I think she seen how life works, a lot of the dreams young people have aren't really dreams, rather a fantasy. Through living life, we find our true purpose/dream that we want to pursue. This is a process that people have to go through themselves and find what they really want, therefore Kosono doesn't really pressure Yuki to keep inventing.
