One major difference between the relationship of Kosono and Yuri and that of Odaka and Aguri, is that Kosono is a motherly figure to Yuki, whereas Odaka is dating Aguri. The dynamic between Kosono and Yuri is seen through the fact that she provided a home and food for Yuri. Additionally, she gave him a space to explore his interest in inventing. In return she expected nothing. Odaka talks a lot about Aguri's youthful physique which shows he has been intimate with her. Moreover, the age difference seems to be another contrast. Kosono is an aging Geisha who is probably one or two generations older than Yuri while Odaka (although distinctly older) is not as much older than Aguri. Kosono's older age is apparent when she is always amazed by the simple technologies of the modern day. The new technologies "made her feel as if her generation had been living all these years in a dream, like some old lantern flickering on and off." Kosono also offers some wisdom that one who lived longer would pass on. After she noticed Yuri's depressive manner and apathetic she told him, "whatever it takes, find out what it is you're willing to suffer for. You've got to balance o pleasure with pain in this life." In a way she was reflecting back in her life. As during that time she was taking classes and learning new things she couldn't have time for as a Geisha. Odaka is a man in his thirties. He has been with Aguri for several years. Although her age was not explicitly said we can guess Aguri is in her early twenties as Odaka has been with her since she was fourteen. Odaka does provide for her but not in a massive way like Kosono. Instead he buys her clothes, which can be a common thing to buy for a girlfriend or boyfriend.
One similarity between the relationships is that the receivers (Yuri and Aguri) do not seem to be appreciative as they ought to be. Yuri eventually runs away every so often. Also, he begins to loose passionate feelings about his life. Ultimately, Kosono calls him spoiled. While walking along a shopping commune, Odaka who is clearly physically weak, collapses on the street. Instead of trying to console him, Aguri says "Oh, are you dead? How tiresome?" Moreover, she is annoyed rather than concerned. She even thinks of taking his money as she justifies that he was, after all, crazy for her. Later on when he starts crying from what seems like an anxiety attack she yells at him and tells him he's embarrassing, all the while he was going to buy her new western clothes. Another similarity, is that the older of the people seem to dote on the youth of their younger companion.
Question: What were Kosono's intention when she let Yuri live with her? Was she trying to set him up with Michiko?
